Forty shows for BBC Two birthday
Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais wrote and starred in The Office
BBC Two programmes The Office and Yes Minister are among 40 classic shows highlighted to celebrate the 40th birthday of the channel.

The channel launched on 20 April 1964 but the opening night was hit by a power failure in west London.

The first programme to be screened was Playschool, which ran for 24 years.

The programmes were selected by TV listings magazine Radio Times and also feature dramas This Life, Edge of Darkness and I, Claudius.

The list includes programmes which are still going strong, including Newsnight and Have I Got News For You.

Match of the Day is one of a number of shows which started life on BBC Two before transferring to BBC One.

The most recent entry on the list is comedy sketch show Little Britain, which began life on digital channel BBC Three.

BBC Two transmitted the country's first colour broadcast on 1 July 1967.

It consisted of four hours of coverage from the Wimbledon tennis championships.

The first colour TV licence followed on 1 January 1968.
