A record 7.1 million people tuned into Big Brother to watch Stuart Wilson being booted out of the surveillance show's house in a surprise eviction.
Host Davina McCall quizzed Stuart about his relationship with Michelle
The 20-year-old student was ejected two days before the series' final, after receiving the least votes to win.
The show, which screened between 2230 and 2305 BST, gave Big Brother 5 its best ratings for a live eviction.
An earlier edition of the show, with highlights of the previous 24 hours in the house, attracted 5.7 million.
Stuart departed shortly after Michelle, the housemate with whom he became romantically involved, was voted off last Friday.
He was barred from saying goodbye to remaining housemates, but was greeted with massive cheers by a waiting crowd.
The other housemates did not know the circumstances of Stuart's departure.
Hearing the rapturous crowd, they mistakenly thought Stuart must have won the show.
Asked if he had any comment on his sudden eviction, Stuart said: "It has been cool. I have enjoyed every minute. Thank you very much."
Michelle Bass has been accused of being too possessive of Stuart
He was later asked by the show's host Davina McCall about his relationship with Michelle Bass before the pair were reunited on air.
Stuart, who had earlier been told Michelle was not there, said he had initially been reluctant to begin a public relationship but believed the pair definitely had a future together.
Following a week of public voting, the remaining contestants will leave the house in reverse order during the final live shows on Friday.
Portuguese-born Nadia Almada is the bookmakers' favourite to win.
