Peter Andre: Return of the six-pack
Peter Andre
Peter Andre had a year of stardom - then vanished from view
Pop singer Peter Andre hoped his spell in the I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! jungle would revive his career. It did - with a re-released Mysterious Girl entering the chart at number one.

His flirtation with glamour model Jordan kept viewers hooked to the show - and the fall-out from that has kept both in the tabloid spotlight since the series ended three weeks ago.

The 31-year-old was born Peter Jay Andrea in London to Greek parents, but moved to Australia when he was 10.

When he was 16 he entered an Australian TV talent show, performing Bobby Brown's song Don't Be Cruel. He said he was offered a record deal on the spot.

Andre returned to the UK in 1993 with his heart set on stardom - and three years later, he achieved it, with his breakthrough hit Only One making number 16, followed by Mysterious Girl, which reached number two in June 1996.

Number one at the time was Baddiel and Skinner's Three Lions football anthem, while the Spice Girls were just a few weeks away from their debut hit Wannabe.

Andre's bronzed "six-pack" figure became ubiquitous during 1996, and two number ones followed - Flava and I Feel You.

'Loser'

But in 1997, he came away from the Smash Hits Awards smarting from being dubbed least fanciable male and loser of '97 by its readers. To add insult to injury, he walked away with worst haircut as well.

In early 1998, while promoting his single All Night All Right, he said: "I'm maturing. I don't want to listen to tacky records and I don't want to have to record bubblegum songs just to sell records because that's not coming from within."

All Night All Right limped into the chart at number 16, and just one more hit, Kiss The Girl, followed before Andre vanished from view.

He quit the UK to return to his family in Australia, but more recently moved to Cyprus to work at his brother's gym.

Andre briefly returned to the public eye last summer when it was revealed he once had a fling with Big Brother contestant Tania Do-Nascimento.

But the success of the re-released Mysterious Girl has given Andre's career a new lease of life.

As the tabloid press speculates about the state of his love life, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to sustain a second burst of fame.
