'Final' single from the Beatles
The Beatles' Yellow Submarine album has been remixed
The Beatles are to release a long-lost track, believed to be an out-take from the 1968 Abbey Road sessions for the animated fantasy film, Yellow Submarine.
The as yet unnamed song is sung by the late John Lennon - who was shot dead in 1980 - and is scheduled for release this autumn to coincide with the re-release of the Yellow Submarine album and film. It is said to be their final single.
In 1995, an unfinished home recording of Lennon's Free As A Bird got to number two in the UK singles chart when the surviving Beatles laid down tracks to accompany the 1977 recording.
The 1996 Beatles Anthology also included the new number, Real Love, based on a John Lennon vocal track from 1979, and different versions of old songs.
'Like nothing you've ever heard'
EMI Records is behind the new promotional push for Yellow Submarine. The film has been unavailable on video for a decade and is to be re-released in a new form.
It is also the first time a Beatles album has ever been remixed, according to an EMI spokesman.
"It's all come out in a completely different form. It's like nothing you've ever heard by the Beatles before. But it's fundamentally still the Beatles. I think it sounds fantastic."
In an attempt to recreate Yellow Submarine fever, the record company is promoting tie-in merchandise and even considering hiring a real yellow submarine to sail up the River Mersey in Liverpool.
