EastEnder Barry's death draws 14m
The untimely death of EastEnders character Barry Evans pulled in an audience of 14m on New Year's Day.

The episode matched the Christmas Day instalment of the BBC soap, which saw Kat and Alfie Moon get married.

Barry, played by Shaun Williamson, plunged over a cliff in Scotland on the first day of his honeymoon to Janine Butcher. The episode peaked with an audience of 14.6m viewers.

A storyline on ITV1 soap Emmerdale which saw the village battered by a storm won an audience high of 12m.


Kidman 'gets 2m for perfume ad'

Nicole Kidman is being paid 2m to star in an advert for Chanel perfume, The Sunday Times reports.

The paper said Kidman would work for four days on the four-minute commercial, a "mini-love story" which was expected to be shown in cinemas around the world later this year.

Minute for minute, it was believed to be the most lucrative package ever offered to an actor for advertising work, the report added.

Kidman, 36, was reputedly paid 10m for her role in the Oscar-tipped US civil war drama Cold Mountain.


Stars flock to Sting tribute

Sting is to be honoured with a musical tribute which will feature Sir Elton John, Dido and a host of other artists.

The gala is taking place to honour the former Police frontman as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences' MusiCares Person of the Year.

The concert in February will see a string of artists perform some of Sting's best-known work.

Sting - real name Gordon Sumner - has been chosen for the award mainly in recognition of his charity work.


Soap actor 'to quit Street'

Coronation Street actor Jimmi Harkishan has reportedly said he plans to leave the soap because of the pressures of fame.

Harkishan, 39, who plays shopkeeper Devandra Alahan, told The People newspaper he had been abused in the street by fans who disapproved of his character's "womanising" ways.

He said since joining four years ago he had been plagued by a stalker and scorned by fellow Asian actors for "lowering" himself in the role.

"I am living in a goldfish bowl. It's madness," he said.

A Coronation Street spokesperson said: "Jimmi is under contract until the end of 2004."


Manics singer's marriage plans

Manic Street Preachers singer James Dean Bradfield is to get married in the spring.

Bradfield, 34 will wed marketing manager Mylene Halsall, 30, in a star-studded ceremony at Llanfihangel Court, Monmouthshire.

The couple are planning a wedding for close family and friends, including band mates Nicky Wire and Sean Moore and the parents of missing singer Richey Edwards.

Members of fellow Welsh rockers the Stereophonics will also be invited.
