The Return of the King is leading the nominations in the annual Online Film Critics Society awards.
The final part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy will compete for 10 titles, including best picture, director and supporting actor for Sean Astin.
Johnny Depp has a best actor nomination for Pirates of the Caribbean, as does Sean Penn for Mystic River.
The Online Film Critics Society is a body of film journalists, scholars and historians whose work appears online.
Best picture
The Return of the King will also compete in the adapted screenplay, cinematography, original score, visual effects, art direction, costume design and sound categories.
City of God, Kill Bill: Volume 1, Lost in Translation and Mystic River are also nominated for the best picture award.
Last year the second Lord of the Rings film, The Two Towers, was named best picture and its director Peter Jackson took the best director award.
The society will announce the winners in all 19 categories on Monday.
