Rap star P Diddy is to make his Broadway debut in a revival of a landmark drama about a black family who move into an all-white neighbourhood.

Producer David Binder called Lorraine Hansbury's A Raisin in the Sun "an American classic". It is expected to open on Broadway next April.

The 1959 production, starring Sidney Poitier, was made into a film in 1961.

Diddy, real name Sean Combs, appeared in the film Monster's Ball, but has no previous theatre experience.

"It is an American classic alongside Streetcar, Death of a Salesman and The Crucible," Mr Binder said. "And it has never had a Broadway revival."

Auditions

Mr Binder said he contacted the rap star in September after he said he "was interested in doing serious, challenging work in the theatre".

The rapper had several auditions for the role, Mr Binder said. "We were all incredibly impressed - he's focused on the work," the producer said.

"We are approaching very seasoned New York theatre actors to fill out the rest of the cast," he added.

Diddy has also appeared in the film Made, which starred Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau.

A Raisin in the Sun will be directed by Kenny Leon and rehearsals are expected to start in February.

The play was also turned into a musical in 1973. Its title comes from a line in a Langston Hughes poem: "What happens to a dream deferred?/Does it dry up/Like a raisin in the sun?"
