Music stars pay tribute to Cash

A diverse line-up of country and rock music stars have remembered the late Johnny Cash at a memorial concert in Nashville, Tennessee.

Cash's daughter Roseanne opened the show with a rendition of her father's song I Still Miss Someone.

Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson and rapper Kid Rock also performed, while actor Tim Robbins hosted the concert.

Cash, who died in September at the age of 71, won two posthumous Country Music Awards last week.

Cash's cover of the Nine Inch Nails track Hurt - the video of which earned the late star an MTV award - was performed by Crow.

"When he gave his voice to something, he dedicated his voice and his intellect," said Crow.

Kid Rock said: "He represents someone who would stand up for what they believe in, but also could hold a baby very gently and get it to stop crying."

Cash's stepdaughter Carlene Carter said the family had been having a difficult time coming to terms with the death of both her mother, June Carter Cash, and Johnny, just months apart.

"This is truly a tribute," she said at the concert.

"It's a way for us to celebrate the music they brought to the world."

U2 frontman Bono recorded a special message for the tribute, raising a pint of Guinness to Cash's memory.

"He was not just an oak tree in a garden of weeds now, he's in heaven with June where all the saints are," said Bono.

Cash, whose career started in the 1950s, had some of country music's most classic hits, including I Walk The Line, Folsom Prison Blues and Ring of Fire.
