JK Rowling leads rich list entrants from the arts
Harry Potter author JK Rowling is the best paid author in history, according to a list of Britain's top earners.

Rowling, currently writing the sixth Potter book, earned 125m last year - the equivalent of 388 for each word in this year's Order of the Phoenix.

The author, whose has sold 230m books worldwide, came fifth in the Sunday Times list of the UK's top 500 earners.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, 14, was the youngest entrant on the list earning a reported 1.75m in 12 months.

Rowling's success has also boosted the fortunes of her agent, Christopher Little. He is at number 37 in the list after earning an estimated 18.75m, according to the Sunday Times.

Mr Little is said to have approached 12 publishers with the first draft of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone before Bloomsbury took him up on the deal.

Author Jackie Collins, famous for her steamy blockbusters, is said to have taken 10m in earnings, including takings from her new book Hollywood Divorces.

Barbara Taylor Bradford, famed for her 1979 debut novel A Woman Of Substance, features in the list with a reported 6.45m in earnings, following the publication of her 19th book Emma's Secret.

Archer fortune

Disgraced politician Lord Archer is said to have made 5.6m from his books and other deals - despite having spent almost all of the past 12 months in prison for perjury and perverting the course of justice.

Crime writer Jack Higgins also appears, with the 74-year-old estimated to have made 2.8m, while fantasy author Terry Pratchett is reported to have taken 2m in the past year.

Artists in the pay list include Lucian Freud, who is said to earn at least 12m each year.

Damien Hirst is close behind, with his earnings estimated at 11.5m.

It was revealed on Thursday that Sir Paul McCartney was the highest-earning music and showbusiness personality on the list, taking 40m in the past year.

The overall highest earner, according to the newspaper, is Russian oil billionaire Roman Abramovich, who bought Chelsea football club in July.
