Friends of Jam Master Jay have gathered on the first anniversary of his murder to remember the rapper.

The Run-DMC rapper's mother, sister, brother and his young sons also attend the remembrance in Queens, New York.

He was killed by a man who walked into Jay's recording studio and shot him once in the head. No-one has been arrested over the murder.

"We all suffered a great, great loss," said comedian Keith Rock, who led the Thursday night event.

Police have said the case remains a top priority and are pursuing a number of "significant leads".

Jay, whose real name was Jason Mizell, joined 20 years ago with Joseph "Run" Simmons and Daryl "DMC" McDaniels to form Run-DMC.

The group's hits include King of Rock, It's Tricky and a top 40 cover of Aerosmith's Walk This Way.

More recently, Jam Master Jay had helped produce and promote lesser-known artists.

The city, music industry notables and family members have helped keep the death in the headlines by offering tens of thousands of dollars in rewards for information.
