Coronation Street star bankrupt

Bill Roache is Coronation Street's longest-serving star

Actor Bill Roache has declared himself bankrupt because of the cost of defending claims that he was as boring as his Coronation Street character.

The 66-year-old actor, who earns around £166,000 a year playing Ken Barlow in the ITV soap, was granted a bankruptcy order on 30 March, the Official Receivers confirmed on Monday.

The actor's financial troubles began when he took on The Sun newspaper after it claimed he was as boring, smug and unpopular as his screen character.

Roache won his libel case but was forced to pay substantial legal costs after he turned down the paper's settlement offer.

The actor then sued the law firm which advised him, but lost, leaving him with another bill.

A trustee will now be appointed to manage Roache's assets and he faces losing his car and his luxury Cheshire home.

The star could also find that the trustee takes over his salary and leaves him with just a basic allowance to live on.

Insolvency lawyer Mark Whittell at Manchester firm Cobbetts said: "He will be allowed a certain standard of living but the court has the power to order that some money is paid into his estate."
