A comedy adventure film starring former wrestling star, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, has topped the US film chart.

The Rundown, in which Johnson plays a bounty hunter, has made about $18.5m (11.2m) since opening on Friday.

Another new entry, Under the Tuscan Sun, took the second spot.

The romance, starring Diane Lane, shared its position with last week's number one thriller, Underworld.

Under the Tuscan Sun took $9.4m (5.7m) over the weekend, an impressive showing considering it opened in only a third as many cinemas as The Rundown.

While The Rundown's takings were in line with industry expectations, it was a long way off from the $36m (21.8m) made by Johnson's last film, The Scorpion King, in 2002.

Slowdown

Christopher Walken also stars in The Rundown as an unhinged despot who has turned the Brazilian jungle and its inhabitants into his own fortune-making, gold-mining empire.

The only other new entry in the top ten was Duplex, starring Ben Stiller and directed by Danny de Vito. It took $4.6m (2.8m).

Two films released the week before kept their top five places, although they were squeezed down two places each by the debut efforts.

Michael Caine film, Secondhand Lions, was fourth and The Fighting Temptations, starring Cuba Gooding Junior and R&B singer Beyonce Knowles, took fifth spot.

Overall, the top 12 films made $79m (47m), down 12% from the weekend before and down 14% on the same time last year when Reese Witherspoon's comedy, Sweet Home Alabama, was tops with $36m (21.8m).

The Legally Blonde star is one of Hollywood's hottest properties and helped the film to break the opening weekend record for September 2002, despite critics' jibes.
