Comic Kay's bitter ads top poll
Peter Kay
Kay is best-known for his comedy series Phoenix Nights
A series of TV commercials for bitter starring comedian Peter Kay has been voted among the best adverts of 2002.

Three adverts for John Smith's beer caught the eye of the judges, including Kay's "top bombing" diving contest ad.

The panel also selected an advert for Levi's Jeans featuring the heads of mice superimposed on humans and Marmite's "lifeguard" commercial.

The top 50 ads, announced in a ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, are not ranked in any order.

Another ad also in the top 50, voted for by the Advertiser Producers Association, was one for car manufacturer Honda, which featured a line of car parts in a domino-like line.

'Stood out'

It won a separate competition for "coolest ad of the year" in August.

The APA judges chose the top 50 from more than 450 commercials submitted.

"We wanted to look for commercials that stood out from the crowd and the 50 adverts chosen have done that," said APA chief executive Stephen Davies.

"They have got viewers thinking about the product in the way the advertisers want us to do," he said.

The competition, which is in its second year, aims to create an archive of the UK's most popular ads.
