Izzard is voicing the part of It, the 8,000 year-old sand fairy in E Nesbitt's story Five Children And It.
He will star alongside Kenneth Branagh, Zoe Wanamaker and Tara Fitzgerald in the film, which has received £2.1m of lottery money from the UK Film Council's Premiere Fund.
Producers hope it will follow in the footsteps of the Harry Potter series and become a huge family hit.
It tells the story of five youngsters who dig up a fairy, who will help make their dreams come true.
The film will use the production expertise of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, whose its have included Babe and 101 Dalmations, and will be a mixture of live action, animatronics and computer generated animation.
