New faces for holiday shows

Craig Doyle: Follows in the footsteps of Jill Dando - and Des Lynam

TV shows Holiday and Wish You Were Here...? have unveiled new presenters. Former hosts Jill Dando and Anthea Turner are both stepping down from their respective shows.

The 28-year-old Dubliner Craig Doyle has been revealed as the new presenter of BBC One's Holiday programme, a day after ITV announced Mary Nightingale would be replacing Turner on Wish You Were Here?

Doyle is already a regular traveller on the show and hosts spin-off programme Holiday On A Shoestring.

"I am far too scruffy to be like Jill Dando, but it is an honour to be stepping into her sandals," he said.

Dando has hosted Holiday for seven years, and she can still be seen hosting the Summer Holiday strand.

She said: "I wish Craig every success with Holiday. I've enjoyed every second of my journeys to foreign climes, and feel privileged to have become such a seasoned traveller on behalf of BBC viewers.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be handing over the mantle to someone with energy and enthusiasm who loves the programme as much as I do."

Doyle added he was delighted to be following in the footsteps of his hero, Des Lynam.

"When I heard the news I rang Dublin and told my family. They were overjoyed, except for my father who said, 'Oh no, does that mean I won't be able to watch Jill Dando.'"

Nightingale flies for ITV

Over on ITV, the other most sought-after job in television has been filled by Mary Nightingale, who will be taking over as host of Wish You Were Here...? from Anthea Turner.

Nightingale is best known as a news presenter on London ITV stations Carlton and LWT.

She is currently in negotiations to sign up for other ITV programmes.

An ITV spokeswoman said Turner had "tired" of travelling, while production company Pearson Television said it was looking for a "change of direction" for the programme.

"Mary is absolutely thrilled to be taking over such a splendid job," said Nightingale's agent Alex Armitage.

"She has always enjoyed travel as well as being a great journalist and this is the perfect job for her.

"I understand she enjoys airline food."
