EastEnders cleans up at TV awards

EastEnders stars Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace scooped the titles of best soap newcomer and best soap actress in British soaps at the TV Quick awards.

The pair, who picked up their awards at a ceremony at London's Dorchester Hotel on Monday, impressed the viewers with their on-off love affair behind the bar in the Queen Vic.

Wallace, who plays fiery barmaid Kat Slater, beat off competition from her co-stars Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo) and Natalie Cassidy (Sonia) to take the crown.

The soap also took the overall best soap award for the third year running.

Best soap actor award went to Brian Capron for his role as murderer Richard Hillman in Coronation Street, while his campaign of terror earned the Street best soap storyline.

The night's other accolades went to ITV1's Bad Girls.

The prison saga was voted best loved drama and Claire King, who plays prison boss Karen Betts, won best actress.

Best actor went to Cold Feet star James Nesbitt, who had the nation in tears with his portrayal of grieving husband Adam after wife Rachel was killed in a car accident.

Ant and Dec had two reasons to celebrate - best entertainment show for Ant And Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, and best reality show for I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.

Channel 4 ratings winner Wife Swap won best factual programme and the BBC's Bargain Hunt scooped best lifestyle show.
