Executives at NBC and Warner Brothers are in talks about a new sitcom involving actor Matt LeBlanc, says US trade newspaper Hollywood Reporter.
The 10th and final series of Friends will be broadcast in the US in the autumn.
The paper adds its sources stressed no deals had been made and no commitment had been given by LeBlanc for such a new series.
Experienced Friends writers Scott Silveri and Shana Goldberg-Meehan would be approached to write a pilot if a deal could be struck, it reported.
Spin-offs are a regular feature in US television and have spawned many hits.
Frasier, a spin-off of Cheers, is one of the most popular comedies of all time and has earned more Emmy nominations than any other sitcom.
The recent drama spin-off CSI: Miami has become one of the most popular shows in the US.
NBC and Warner Bros have not commented on the reports.
Last week Matt LeBlanc earned a second consecutive Emmy nomination for his role in Friends.
