007 goes to the Dome

The Millennium Dome: Will feature in The World Is Not Enough

London's Millennium Dome is to star alongside Pierce Brosnan in the opening scenes of the new James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough.

The spy hero will be seen falling onto a replica of the roof from the ropes of a balloon carrying a Bond villain, played by actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta.

The rooftop drama will come as the climax to a high speed boat chase up the River Thames, and will form the introduction to the film.

The New Millennium Experience Company, set up by the government to build the £750m structure on the Greenwich Peninsula, will be allowing film-makers Eon Productions access to the site in the spring. The Dome will be made up to look like it is open.

Producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement: "It is refreshing to have a brand new icon featuring right at the beginning of our film. The Dome is photogenic and we look forward to using it to make the opening exciting and fun."

Sections of the Dome's roof are being rebuilt at Pinewood Studios so the more difficult stunts can be filmed.

NMEC chief executive Jennie Page said: "The Dome is all about the best of British, and we feel extremely proud that a British institution such as James Bond will be working with us. We wish it every success."

The company is already promoting the Dome with a £70m advertising campaign featuring Jeremy Irons, and the structure is to glow red on 12 March as part of Comic Relief's Red Nose Day.

The Dome - now a major landmark on London's skyline - will also feature in the title sequence of BBC One soap EastEnders when it is updated.

Although the Dome is new, the former gasworks where it stands is not a new location for film-makers. It was a favourite location for film and TV crews until construction of the Dome started in 1997.
