The five-month-old pedigree golden retriever replaces the much-loved Bonnie who has spent 13 years on the show and is now enjoying canine retirement.

Lucy has been whisked off to attend a obedience classes to prepare her for her starring role on the live show. While she is training new presenter Simon Thomas will look after her.

"Living in London it is really hard for me to have my own dog, but now I am really lucky as I have a special friend to share the studio and go filming with.

"I can't wait to take her through her training," he said.

Wednesday's Blue Peter will be devoted to saying goodbye to Bonnie.

Blue Peter editor Stephen Hocking said: "Bonnie has been a great friend to many of our viewers and we know that many of them will be sad to see her go.

"I hope that Lucy will be a new friend for Blue Peter viewers and I know that very soon she too will have a special place in their hearts."

After her training Lucy will live with Leonie Pocock, who also looks after Bonnie and Blue Peter's other dog Mabel, a border collie cross.
