Ben Affleck plays the blind hero Daredevil who battles evil in New York with the aid of his heightened senses.
The film took $43.5m (£27.2m) in its opening weekend, according to studio estimates, making it the second ever biggest February release behind the 2000 hit Hannibal.
The film knocked last week's number one, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, into second place over the President's Day weekend holiday.
The romantic comedy, starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, was given a Valentine's Day boost with weekend takings of $19m (£11.8m), pushing its total to $47.7m (£29.8m).
Musical extravaganza Chicago is benefiting from its 13 Oscar nominations, staying in third, spot two months after it was released.
The number of cinemas it is being shown in was increased following news of its Academy Award promise and it took $12.6m (£7.8m) over the three-day period.
Chicago, which stars Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee Zellwegger, has taken $80.7m (£50.4m) since its release.
Disney, which has struggled with animated success in recent years, saw the sequel The Jungle Book 2 open in fourth place with $11.9m (£7.4m).
The film was produced on a relatively tight budget of $20m (£12.5m) and features the voice of young Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment as Mowgli, who returns to the jungle to see his old friends.
Jackie Chan's latest martial arts action comedy Shanghai Knights has proved another hit for the Hong Kong star following the success of Rush Hour and The Tuxedo.
The latest adventure, which is at number five, also stars Zoolander's Owen Wilson as he and Chan travel to London to exact revenge.
