Surprise mention for gun exposť film
Michael Moore
Bowling For Columbine has made $18m in the US so far
Michael Moore's gun culture documentary Bowling for Columbine has received a surprise nomination for best original screenplay in the Writers Guild of America's awards.

It is the first time a documentary has received a nomination for best original screenplay.

The nominations, announced on Thursday, also included My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Far From Heaven, Gangs of New York and Antwone Fisher for best original screenplay.

The film, an essay on America's obsession with firearms, has taken $18m (£11.2m), more money than any other documentary in US history.

Moore said he was "shocked and honoured" at the inclusion.

"Documentary writing is probably the hardest form of screenwriting because you can't really write until you shoot the film," he said.

"I do an outline and I have a general idea of where I'm going, but I have to think and write on my feet when I'm in the field."

The list is chosen by members of the Writers Guild of America, which represents writers in the movie, TV and new media worlds.

The awards will be handed out on 28 March.

Documentaries ignored

The film, which has also proved to be a big hit in the UK and Europe, is expected to be included in this year's Oscar nomination for best documentary.

Its inclusion in the Writers Guild nominations surprised many in Hollywood because documentaries are usually ignored in the big award ceremonies.

The guild also awards nominations for best adapted screenplay and for television.

The best adapted screenplay nominees this are Chicago, The Hours, Adaptation, About Schmidt and About A Boy.

Last year the best original screenplay was won by Robert Altman's murder mystery Gosford Park and best adapted screenplay by A Beautiful Mind, starring Russell Crowe.
