Globe honours for Churchill drama
Albert Finney as Winston Churchill
Finney played wartime leader Winston Churchill
BBC World War II drama, The Gathering Storm, and US police drama The Shield were among the TV winners at the 60th Golden Globes.

Based on the events leading-up to World War 2, The Gathering Storm won best mini-series or TV movie and best actor in a mini-series or TV movie for veteran actor Albert Finney.

The Shield, a US police drama starring Michael Chiklis as corrupt detective Vic Mackey, was one of the night's other big winners.

It won best TV drama and a best actor in a TV drama award for Chiklis.

The Shield
The Shield has proved controversial in the US

Finney played Winston Churchill in the drama, a co-production between the BBC and US cable channel HBO.

"Albert Finney's portrayal of Churchill was one of the outstanding performances of last year, and it's fantastic to see an actor at the top of his craft being so acknowledged," said David Thompson, head of BBC Films.

"He brought immense humanity and intimacy to the role of such a great public figure."

The Shield, hugely popular in the States, is fast becoming a television force to be reckoned with.

Chiklis won outstanding lead actor in a drama series at the Emmys last year.
Larry David

The best TV comedy award went to cable show Curb Your Enthusiasm, the improvised comedy from Seinfeld creator Larry David.

Edie Falco, who stars as Carmela Soprano in the US mob drama series The Sopranos, won best TV drama actress but had to whisper her acceptance speech because she was suffering laryngitis.

Jennifer Aniston won best actress in musical or comedy series for Friends.

The star, whose husband Brad Pitt presented an award, took to the stage with the help of a cane because of a broken toe.

Best TV actor in a musical or comedy series went to Tony Shalhoub, who plays the lead role in the detective series The Monk.
Kim Cattrall
Kim Cattrall won for her role as the Samantha in Sex And The City

The best actress award in a mini series went to Pulp Fiction star Uma Thurman for Hysterical Blindness, a drama about three women living in New Jersey.

Kim Cattrall won best supporting actress for her role as the promiscuous Samantha in Sex And The City.

Receiving her award she joked: "You have no idea how many men I've had to sleep with to get this award."

Best supporting actor went to Donald Sutherland in mini-series Path To War.

The awards have seen continued success for cable channels.

The Shield is shown on channel FX, while Curb Your Enthusiasm and Sex And The City come from HBO.

The awards, which recognise both TV and film, are organised by a panel of 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press.
