Comic's wedding photos upset in-laws
Johnny Vegas
Johnny Vegas sold his wedding photos for just £1
Comic Johnny Vegas said he upset his in-laws by selling his wedding photos to the adult comic Viz.

The star sold pictures of his San Francisco wedding to designer Kitty Donnelly for £1, in an attempt to be "anti-celebrity".

Vegas, who achieved fame by starring with a puppet monkey in adverts for ITV Digital, had reportedly wanted £5 but was haggled down.

But his efforts did not amuse his wife's grandmother who bought the comic and thought it was "filth".

'Ten steps back'

Vegas, from St Helens, Merseyside, said: "She told me 'Your wedding photos are next to a comic strip of a lad with unfeasibly large testicles.

"It put me 10 steps back with my in-laws," he told the Sunday Express magazine S:2.

He said he sold the photos to Viz as an attack on celebrity culture which sees stars selling their wedding photos for six or seven-figure sums.

He added: "I don't like jumping onto the moral high ground, but I find our obsession with celebs pretty crass.

Infamous characters

"We knew someone would get hold of the pictures somehow, so we thought 'let's release them in an anti-celebrity way'."

The comic is infamous for its risqué strips featuring characters such as Sid the Sexist and The Fat Slags.

It featured a spread of pictures showing the couple walking, sitting on a bench and kissing.

Vegas returns to television screens on 14 January in the second series of BBC2's Happiness.
