The Colour of Justice has been running at the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn, north London, for two weeks. The play is a reconstruction of events at the inquiry into the police's investigation of the south London teenager's death. Lawrence was killed by a gang of white youths in a racist attack in Eltham, south London in April 1993. No-one has ever been convicted for his murder - resulting in accusations of racism, corruption and incompetence in the Metropolitan Police. Inquiry chairman Sir William Macpherson is due to announce his findings next month. The play covers all aspects of the inquiry from testimonies of the police officers who dealt with the case to the appearance of the five men accused of killing Lawrence. 'Unable to cope with box office demand' The Colour of Justice will move to the Theatre Royal, Stratford, east London from 15-27 before opening at the West End's Victoria Palace Theatre from 3-13 March.
In addition, the BBC is in negotiations about producing a version of the play for television. TV cameras were not allowed into the inquiry and the play is intended to give the public a chance to have an overview of the proceedings and an insight into the evidence. Meanwhile, Granada Television is working on its own dramatisation of the Stephen Lawrence inquiry. A Granada spokesman said their production concentrates on the experiences of his family - notably his parents Neville and Doreen, played by Hugh Quarshie and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. No transmission date has been set, but it is due to be shown by ITV in the spring. |
