Plane row delays Trevi extradition
Gloria Trevi
Ms Trevi and her son were due to take a commercial flight
Pop singer Gloria Trevi's long-awaited extradition to her native Mexico to face sexual abuse charges has been delayed after her journey out of Brazil met with a last minute hitch.

Ms Trevi, known as the Mexican Madonna, was arrested in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 and has been in and out of jail in Brasilia while her home country attempts to bring her to face charges in a Mexican court.

On Thursday, Ms Trevi was finally on route for Mexico when she was prevented from leaving Sao Paolo airport because of a row over what sort of aircraft should be used to transport her.

Ms Trevi was expected to leave on a commercial flight but Mexican authorities announced that they wanted her to travel on a private jet - a demand the Brazilian federal police felt unable to accept.

Ms Trevi denies all the charges against her. She has consistently against being sent back to Mexico.

But, at the end of November, her lawyers announced that she no longer wanted to pursue any remaining legal options to stop her return.

The latest hold-up will be seen as just another instalment in the long-running and complicated saga surrounding the singer.

Angelino Alves of Brazil's federal police called the Mexican authorities' plane request an "imposition".

Mr Alves said Ms Trevi's extradition was approved on the understanding that she would leave on a commercial plane and that the Mexican change in plans invalidated that agreement.

Mr Alves said the singer would spend the night in federal prison accommodation in Sao Paulo but he did not know when the disagreement would be resolved.

Rape claims

Ms Trevi was travelling with the baby she had and conceived while in jail in Brazil and which, as a result, has Brazilian nationality.

At one point in her fight against extradition, Ms Trevi pleaded that she did not want to go back to Mexico because it would mean separation from her son.

There were accusations that she deliberately became pregnant to avoid being thrown out of Brazil.

She claimed she had been raped by a prison guard but DNA tests showed the father was Sergio Andrade, the singer's ex-husband, who had visited her inside jail.

Ms Trevi was arrested in Brazil with Mr Andrade, along with backup singer Maria Raquenel Portillo.

All three are charged with corrupting a minor. They all deny any wrongdoing.

Solicitors for Mr Andrade and Ms Portillo will continue appealing against their extradition.

Ms Trevi had fought extradition because she said her life would be in danger if she returned to Mexico.

She claimed prominent figures in business and politics wanted to silence her before she talks about local corruption.
