Gates tops Smash Hits awards

Liberty X picked up best single
Westlife and Gareth Gates shared the spoils at the Smash Hits Poll Winners' T4 Party, winning four awards each.

The Irish boy band won best band on Planet Pop and best international group as well as being inducted into the Smash Hits hall of fame.

Pop Idol runner-up Gates was voted best newcomer, most fanciable male and best haircut.

Quartet Blue, who have scored hits with One Love and All Rise, were voted best UK band and best live act.

But the girls got in on the prize-winning action with the Sugababes picking up best album for Angels With Dirty Faces.

The best female artist was won by Pink, beating tough competition from Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and Holly Valance.

The event being held at the London Arena is being hosted by Channel 4 T4 presenters Vernon Kay and June Sarpong, along with Ozzy Osbourne's daughter Kelly.

'NSync star Justin Timberlake had been due to co-host the ceremony but pulled out after breaking his foot.

Liberty X, who were formed after its members failed to make the winning band on TV's Popstars, were awarded best single for Just a Little.

Atomic Kitten, Ms Dynamite, Blazin' Squad and Holly Valance were among the stars who performed at the awards.

Mouth almighty

But the Smash Hits Awards does not just honour the best in the business but also singles out the worst in showbiz.

Christina Aguilera won the worst dress sense and worst haircut in pop.

Big Brother 3 contestant Jade Goody was voted "mouth almighty" of the year.

Pop Idol winner Will Young had to content himself with only winning best video for his cover of the Doors track Light My Fire.

Adding to its prize-winning year EastEnders was voted best TV programme, beating a host of reality TV shows including Big Brother and Popstars: The Rivals. of Fame.
