Singer Bobby Brown has been arrested on drug and driving charges in Atlanta, in the United States.

He was charged with possession of marijuana, speeding, driving without a licence and having no proof of insurance.

There was also an outstanding warrant in neighbouring DeKalb County, Georgia, for failing to appear at a court hearing in 1996.

Brown, 33, who is married to Whitney Houston, was stopped in Atlanta's fashionable Buckhead area on Thursday. The couple have a home in the city.

A spokeswoman for Atlanta City Jail, were Brown was taken, told BBC News Online: "He's made bond with us and is awaiting transfer to DeKalb."

She said she did not know how much was paid for the bond.

A spokeswoman for the DeKalb County Police Department said the outstanding warrant stemmed from a 1996 hearing for driving under the influence.

Number one

Brown enjoyed international fame in the 1980s and 90s with hits like My Prerogative, On Our Own and Two Can Play That Game.

He had risen to stardom with the R&B group New Edition, who scored a number one single, Candy Girl, when Brown was just 14.

He took part in a New Edition reunion in the mid-90s, which spawned a US number one album.

He has been married to Whitney Houston for 10 years, and she is currently attempting to make a comeback with a new album after a legal ordeal of her own.

She had drug possession charges dropped in March 2001 after being arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession at a Hawaiian airport.
