Tiffany's tumble sees ratings rocket

Tiff's fall was watched by millions

Tiffany Mitchell's fall down the stairs at the Queen Vic saw EastEnders reach 20m viewers, according to official figures.

The Broadcaster's Audience Research Board, Barb, reports total viewing figures of 19.9m for the episode featuring the barmaid's fall while 15.8m tuned in for the next episode. Another 4.4m watching the Sunday omnibus, giving combined figures of 20.2m.

Tiffany, played by Martine McCutcheon, is still in a coma after her near-fatal fall down the stairs of the pub, and suspicion in Albert Square is falling on her husband Grant.

EastEnders' executives fought to keep Martine in the cast of the soap but she decided to leave to further her ambitions for a singing career.

Matthew Robinson, EastEnders' executive producer said he was delighted by the figures, saying they showed "our stories just get better and better".

"It's a great tribute to EastEnders' storyliners, writers and cast, particularly Martine McCutcheon as Tiffany," he said.

ITV's Coronation Street's best combined figure for the week was 18.5m on Wednesday, although a comparison of first showings alone still puts ITV's flagship soap ahead with 17.8m for Monday's episode.
