Shakira sweeps Latin MTV awards

Shakira was the night's winner scooping five awards
Colombian superstar Shakira emerged triumphant at MTV's first ever Latin American music awards, taking home five prizes.

The singer won artist of the year, video of the year, female artist of the year, pop artist of the year and one of the night's three best artist awards.

Chilean rock band La Ley scooped two major prizes - group or duo of the year and rock artist of the year.

The MTV Video Music Awards Latin America, held in Miami, Florida, honoured the best perfomers in Latin music and beyond.

It was held by MTV Latin America, which broadcasts across South America, and viewers voted for its winners.

Shakira won the best artist prize for the north of the region, while Argentina's Diego Torres won for the south east.

Two English language winners included Pink, who won for international pop artist of the year, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who won for international rock artist of the year.

Other winners included Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes, who took home male artist of the year, and Manu Chao, who won alternative artist of the year.

Lifetime achievement

The Rolling Stones opened the event while other performers included Carlos Santana, Mana and Shakira.

Argentine rock band Soda Stereo came together for the first time since 1997 to win the lifetime achievement award.

Enrique Iglesias's video for Hero was among the nominations for video of the year.

The English-language versions of some of the nominated videos have been huge hits on MTV.

Hero and Shakira's video for Whenever, Wherever, have been favourites of the network's Total Request Live countdown.
