My Music: Jane Monheit
New York's Jane Monheit was runner-up in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute vocal competition at the age of 20.

She has since released three albums, the latest of which is In The Sun, and acquired a reputation as one of the most accomplished and exciting singers in jazz.

On 21 November she appears at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the London Jazz Festival.

What was the most recent album you bought?

I just bought a few Brazilian albums by artists like Ivan Lins and Djavan.

Where do you most like listening to music, and why?

I love listening to music in the car - my husband and I always keep the radio on "scan" to catch all the good ones!

What songs do you sing in the bath?

I never sing in the shower! My parakeet does all the singing for me. She loves the sound of the water, and makes quite a ruckus whenever she hears it. I just can't compete!

Are there any songs you can't listen to because they remind you of something you'd rather forget?

There are songs I can't listen to - but only because they're too beautiful, and it's almost too much for me to hear them.

In The Sun
In the Sun is Monheit's third release

What song always makes you cry?

I think my favourite tearjerker is Open Arms by Journey - it's the first song my husband and I ever danced to! Another favourite is Ella and Louis singing Bess, You Is My Woman Now, from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. So romantic!

What were the first records you ever bought?

I can't recall ever buying a single, but the first album I ever bought was the original Broadway cast album of Meredith Wilson's The Music Man.

Which is your favourite song? And your least favourite?

My favourite song, that's impossible to say! Right now, it's probably anything off of A Cor Da Por Do Sol, my favourite Ivan Lins album. My least favourite would be anything that is intensely overplayed at the moment. Everything gets tired after a while.

Which song by another artist do you wish you'd written?

I wish I'd written Comecar De Novo, a song I recorded on my new album. The harmonic structure is so unbelievably beautiful, and the melody so Expressive, I think it's an absolutely brilliant piece of music.

Do you prefer CDs or vinyl?

I actually prefer CDs. It would be awfully hard to travel with a record player and a stack of LPs!

Roughly how many records are there in your collection?

Jane Monheit
Monheit is a fan of singer Norah Jones
It's hard to say - at least a few thousand, between my husband and myself.

What's the best record you've ever bought on impulse?

My favourite impulse buy is Nikka Costa's album. I think she's an amazing vocalist.

Which song from the past 12 months is likely to gain classic status?

I'd love to see Norah Jones' Don't Know Why become a classic - it's such a beautiful song, and Norah sounds incredible.

Which artists do you currently most admire?

I definitely admire Ivan Lins more than anyone - I dream of being able to write music like that.

If you organised your dream music festival, who would you have as headline act - and any supporting acts?

I think at this point in my life, my dream music festival would involve two things: lots of Brazilian music, and the chance to give more exposure to some incredible musicians who need it.
