Lilo and Stitch

Disney's latest cartoon adventure, Lilo and Stitch, has beaten off strong competition to claim the top spot in the UK film chart.

Lilo and Stitch, about a girl who takes in an unusual pet, entered the chart at number one, taking 1.5m in its first weekend.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding remained at number two, with 1.4m, while last week's number one, Mel Gibson's Signs, slipped to number three, earning 1.35m.

But Robin Williams's new thriller, One Hour Photo, could only reach number seven in its opening weekend.

It was beaten by two other new entries, thriller My Little Eye, at number five, and US gross-out comedy Boat Trip, at six.

Gritty Glasgow drama Sweet Sixteen, directed by Ken Loach, was a new entry at number 10.

Lilo and Stitch's success comes despite the fact that it did not hit the top spot when it was released in the United States.

It is about a Hawaiian girl who adopts a pet, only to realise that it has escaped from an illegal genetic experiment and is being hunted by the government.

Directed, written and voiced by Chris Sanders, it has taken more than $210m (134m) around the world.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding has continued its slow-burning success that has seen it camped in the US box office top 10 for the last three months.

Crop circle-based Signs had been the UK's most popular film for three weeks before Lilo and Stitch dislodged it.

Spider-Man is finally dropping out of the chart, now at number 14 with total UK takings of 29m.
