US Idols begin tour
Kelly Clarkson on American Idol
The six-week tour features winner Kelly Clarkson
The American Pop Idol contestants are starting their first US tour in San Diego.

The 10 finalists from the hit television show will perform in a six-week tour which will take them to venues as far apart as Chicago and Dallas.

They hope to build on the success of American Idol which became the summer's biggest television success in the US, with 23 million people watching the final.

Some concert dates have already sold out including dates in Detroit and Atlantic City.

Chart success

Contest winner Kelly Clarkson, from Burleson, Texas, will be taking to the stage hot on the success of her first single.

The former waitress's single A Moment Like went straight to the top of the US charts in September.

It became the highest-selling single of any new release in three years with 236,000 copies sold in its first week.

This success came after UK's Pop Idol winner Will Young broke records in his home country with his debut single.

The double A-side Anything Is Possible/Evergreen, sold more than a million copies within its first week, going straight in at number one in the UK charts in February.

A compilation album featuring the American Idol contestants was released this month ahead of the tour.

But the release of Clarkson's album has been put back from November to the new year.
