UK Pop Idol releases album
Will Young
The debut solo album is out on Monday
Pop Idol winner Will Young's debut album has gone on sale with music industry experts predicting it will be a Christmas best-seller - but will not break the record for debut album sales.

The solo album From Now On features several songs written by the artist.

Young's debut single, Anything Is Possible/Evergreen, sold more than a million copies within its first week, going straight in at number one in the UK charts in February.

David Roberts, editor of The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, said this was a significant milestone. "He has record-breaking status because of that," he said.

But he said he thought, although the album would sell well, the Pop Idol's popularity was beginning to wane.

He said he did not believe the singer could break the record for the biggest-selling debut album by a solo male artist. "If I was a betting man I think I would say no."

Craig David currently holds the title for Born to do It with 1.8 million sales.

However Mr Roberts is convinced Young, who won the ITV1 talent show in February this year, has a big fan base and will be "big news" until the end of next year.

The real test of the Pop Idol's staying power would be the success of his second album, he said.

The album's release comes as Young celebrates chart success with his runner-up in the show, Gareth Gates.

Their cover version of the Beatles' The Long and Winding Road is currently number one.

Young told BBC's Breakfast programme on Monday: "I always wanted to write but I never had the means to do it at university.

He said he had to adapt quickly to overnight success following his winning the ITV1 talent show.

"I remember thinking it is a case of sink or swim. 'I better deal with it or I am going under'," he said.

Kelly Clarkson, who won the American Idol TV talent contest last month, scored the highest-selling single of any new release for three years in the United States.

Her debut A Moment Like This sold 236,000 copies in its first week on full release in September.

The former waitress is due to release her debut album next year. Meanwhile Gareth Gates's album is to be released within the next few weeks.
