Afterplay: Your views
John Hurt
The play premiered in Dublin earlier this year
Brian Friel resurrects Chekhov in his latest work, Afterplay, engineering a meeting between Andrey from the Three Sisters, and Uncle Vanya's niece, Sonya.

John Hurt takes the role of Andrey, with Penelope Wilton as Sonya.

"As the play unfolds and Friel rounds out Chekhov, one cannot help but wish that the characters here had been as unfamiliar from the outset as real strangers at another table," wrote BBC News Online's Patrick Jackson.

But what did you think?

Do you need a good knowledge of Chekhov to enjoy this play? What did you think of the performances?

Have your say

To be truthful, my leading reason to see this play was the cast, and in that respect I wasn't let down. Both were fantastic, with Wilton's compassion and Hurt's edge producing a very watchable effect. I felt let down by the script, which I felt was true to Checkhov to the point of elitism.

Only people who have studied both plays intensly would pick up most references made, and although the concept sounds exciting, in truth, very little actually happens.

There are no new happenings, just discussions of old, and what has happened over the past twenty years, and in this respect I was very disappointed.

Don't go if you're feeling even slightly fatigued, or you might miss the ending...
Tim Groves, UK
