Titanic star in low-key wedding
Kate Winslet and her new husband Jim Threapleton
The actress Kate Winslet has outwitted the gossip columnists and married at her local church away from the prying cameras of newspaper photographers.
The 23-year-old actress tied the knot with fiance Jim Threapleton in a low-key wedding at her family's local church in Reading, Berkshire.
About 150 guests - including Primary Colours star Emma Thompson and her boyfriend Greg Wise - crammed into All Saints' Church for a traditional Anglican ceremony.
Jim, a 25-year-old assistant film director, was ushered in by a team of minders.
Designer wedding dress
His bride, wearing a cream gown by French designer Givenchy, arrived later in a Mercedes.
The couple had tried to keep the wedding secret and the bride's mother laid a trail of subterfuge for Fleet Street's finest.
The couple were married by Father John Mortiboys, who taught Kate and her sisters Beth, 19, and Anna, 26, at St Mary and All Saints' Church of England primary school in the town.
Fr Mortiboys said:"The whole thing was tremendously relaxed and happy.
'Pressure of success'
"They were trying to keep everything as secret as possible because you can imagine what it is like in the glare of the publicity all of the time.
"Since the success of Titanic the family have been under tremendous strain from the pressure of Kate's success."
Fr Mortiboys said no hymns were sung during the 30-minute service and the couple exchanged simple and plain wedding rings.
The wedding reception is taking place on a riverboat on the Thames.
