Trevi moved from jail to convent

Mexican singer Gloria Trevi is to be allowed out of her Brazilian jail - but must remain under house arrest in a convent.

On Thursday the Brazilian Supreme Court agreed to allow Ms Trevi and her baby boy Angel Gabriel to be transferred from prison to a convent, while she awaits the outcome of Mexican attempts to extradite her.

Ms Trevi, a major pop star in her native country, has been in jail in Brazil for two and a half years after being arrested in Rio de Janeiro over sexual abuse charges.

She has since given birth to Angel Gabriel, now five months old, who was conceived behind bars in unexplained circumstances.

Thursday's court ruling comes soon after a Mexican judge granted an injunction to Ms Trevi's lawyers, cancelling her extradition on the grounds it had been incorrectly presented.

Brazilian authorities have said they are now waiting for notification from Mexico on how to proceed.

The decision to allow Ms Trevi and her son to move to a convent on Brasilia's south side was made by Supreme Court President Marco Aurelio Mello.

DNA tests

The order also applies to Maria Raquenel Portillo, Ms Trevi's choreographer, but her former manager, Sergio Andrade, is to remain in jail for the time being.

Brazilian police say that DNA tests showed that Mr Andrade, who was arrested along with her and spent time in the same jail, is the father of her child.

But Ms Trevi has refused to reveal the identity of the father, leading to speculation that the singer had been raped or that she had successfully achieved artificial insemination.

Ms Trevi, Mr Andrade and Mr Portillo were arrested and imprisoned in Brazil at the request of Mexican police, who want them to face charges they corrupted a 17-year-old girl in Ms Trevi's care for musical training.

In December 2000 Brazil's Supreme Court decided to extradite Ms Trevi to Mexico, but the singer's defence lawyers have filed numerous injunctions attempting to reverse the decision.

Her request for political asylum in Brazil was rejected in March 2001.
