Mystikal could face a life sentence if convicted
Rap star Mystikal and two other men have been arrested on suspicion of raping a 40-year-old woman in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Tyler, was charged with the offence as well as one of extortion after giving himself up to police on Thursday morning.

He was subsequently released on $250,000 (161,000) bail.

The other men, Leland Ellis and Vercy Carter, also turned themselves in on Thursday morning, and are still in police custody.

They are accused of attacking her after she came to Tyler's Baton Rouge home on the evening of 3 July.

The alleged rape is thought to have taken place after he threatened to tell police that she had accepted a check made out to her on his checking account, which he had not approved.

Authorities believe that Tyler demanded sex from the woman in exchange for not reporting her to police.

He allegedly assaulted her, then called Ellis and Carter to his house, where all three are believed to have raped her.

"During the attacks, the victim was repeatedly threatened with prosecution of the checks and bodily harm," said a police statement.

"The victim was allowed to leave the residence after the attacks."

Mystikal faces a mandatory life sentence if convicted of rape. Extortion carries a maximum prison term of 15 years.

The rapper's hits include Danger (Been So Long), and the Grammy nominated Shake Ya...

His debut album, Tarantula, was released last year, and he is currently reported to be working on a follow-up.
