Trevi's 'marriage plans' denied
Gloria Trevi with son, Angel Gabriel
Trevi gave birth to Angel Gabriel in February
Confusion over whether jailed Mexican singer Gloria Trevi will marry a Brazilian diplomat has deepened after he denied proposing to her.

Lawyers for Trevi, who recently gave birth in a Brazilian prison, had earlier said the singer - dubbed the Mexican Madonna - had accepted a proposal from Cesario Lopes de Alexandria.

It is the latest twist in a long-running saga that has seen the star accused of going to any lengths to avoid being extradited back to her home country.

She may have a better chance of staying in Brazil if a Brazilian fathered her three-month-old baby boy or if she married a Brazilian.

Just good friends

Trevi's lawyers had said the singer would marry Mr Alexandria, an official in the passport department of Brazil's Foreign Ministry.

But on Thursday, he said they were just "very good friends".

He said he felt "profound admiration and affection" for Trevi, but denied that he had proposed.

If the pair married, Trevi would be granted a diplomatic passport, which could help her with the Mexican courts.

DNA tests showed that Trevi's manager, Sergio Andrade - who is also facing extradition - was the father of her baby son, Angel Gabriel.

But Trevi's lawyers said the tests were rigged.

'Corrupt'

Trevi has claimed she became pregnant after being raped by prison guards.

Trevi, Andrade and choreographer Maria Raquenel Portillo were charged in Mexico with corrupting a 17-year-old girl.

They were arrested in Rio de Janeiro in January 2000, and later transferred to a federal police jail in Brasilia and then to the Papuda penitentiary.

But others claimed she planned it so she could give birth in Brazil - although the law has changed since the days when foreigners were able to use their children's nationality as a means of avoiding extradition.
