Summer Wine star Wharmby dies
Wharmby (r) appeared with Thora Hird and Sarah Thomas
Last of the Summer Wine star Gordon Wharmby, known to fans as Wesley Pegden, has died at the age of 68.

The actor had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and died at a hospital in north Wales after being admitted for an infection.

He appeared in 11 series of Last of the Summer Wine and had been due to begin filming for the next run in just a few days time.

He played the husband of Dame Thora Hird's character Edie for more than a decade.

Although his career was dominated by his long spell in the popular comedy, Wharmby also appeared in All Creatures Great and Small, Poirot, Edge of Darkness and Coronation Street.

'Down to earth'

His agent Barbara Pemberton said: "He was still leading a full life and had been due to begin filming a new series of Last Of The Summer Wine at the weekend."

"I represented him for a long time and he was always a very down to earth man. He was as mild a man as you could ever meet."

Wharmby, who lived near Rhyl, started out in acting fairly late having first worked as a decorator.

He is survived by his wife Muriel.

Jon Plowman, head of comedy entertainment at the BBC, said: "Wesley Pegden was a much-loved character in Last Of The Summer Wine and Gordon will be sadly missed by the cast, crew and viewers of the show."
