Pop Idol winner Will Young is to tour the UK with the show's runner-up, Gareth Gates.

Joining them will be Zoe Birkett, who finished fourth in the ITV1 talent search.

The tour will start on 3 October at the London Arena before moving onto venues including Newcastle, Nottingham and Glasgow.

The announcement was made as all three performed in London's Covent Garden piazza.

Hundreds of fans watched as the trio got up on stage to sing a selection of big band classics from their current album, backed by a 16-piece band.

Young said he was delighted to be touring and claimed it "should be a real laugh".

Birkett said: "I am so excited and it's going to be really great fun to be with the two best looking guys in the UK."

All 10 finalists in the show recently completed a sell-out UK tour, with dates at London's Wembley Arena selling out within hours.

Both Young and Gates have already scored their first number ones.

Young clocked up the fastest-ever selling single in the UK with more than a million sales of his Evergreen/Anything Is Possible CD in the first week alone.

The date has also been announced for the release of Young's follow-up single, Light My Fire.

The song, which he performed on Pop Idol, is being released on 27 May.

He will also be on a star-studded bill at a Jubilee concert in the Buckingham Palace gardens on 3 June.

Gates has just spent a fourth week on the top spot with his cover of Unchained Melody.

A big band album, again featuring all 10 Pop Idol finalists, has also hit the top spot in the compilation charts.

The Pop Idol show has been a launch pad for some of the other acts who did not win.

Birkett is releasing her cover version of Get Happy soon, Jessica Garlick is representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, while Rik Waller has already had a top 10 hit with I Will Always Love You.
