Rock legend David Bowie is teaming up with The Who's Pete Townshend for the first time in more than two decades.

The duo will play on Bowie's new album Heathen - they last collaborated on his Scary Monsters And Super Creeps album which was released in 1980.

It's the most eccentric and aggressive guitar I've heard Pete play

Townshend, who has added a lead guitar line to the track Slow Burn, is one of a host of collaborators on the new CD.

The album also features Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.

Dance star Moby and French electronic duo Air have been brought in to do remixes on some of the tracks.

'Aggressive'

Bowie said he was delighted with Townshend's contribution.

He said it was "the most eccentric and aggressive guitar I've heard Pete play, quite unlike anything else he's done recently".

The album has been produced by Tony Visconti who last worked with Bowie on Scary Monsters.

Bowie recently signed a multi-record deal with Columbia Records after quitting Virgin Records last year.

The music giant will distribute Heathen, which is being released on the singer's own label ISO.

Bowie walked out of his Virgin contract last December because he said he had tired of the bureaucracy and management structure of large record companies.

The singer is set to perform at a series of US and European music festivals this summer and he will also act as curator of the prestigious Meltdown Festival in London during June.

David Bowie has long been one of Britain's most independent and pioneering musicians, releasing songs on the internet long before it was fashionable and even setting up his own online radio station and bank.

Heathen will be released on 10 June.
