Meg Ryan 'stalker' to be treated

A man who allegedly stalked actress Meg Ryan has been placed in the custody of his father, who is planning to put him in a treatment facility.

John Michael Hughes had a restraining order placed against him last month after he was charged with breaking into a house he thought was Ryan's.

The 30-year-old claimed to be her fiancé and the Sleepless in Seattle star won a court order against him, saying she feared for her safety and that of her family.

I think this is the best solution for the long-term safety of Meg Ryan

Prosecutor Loni Petersen
Mr Hughes, who appeared in the Superior Court on Thursday, said he was taking medication and that he no longer believed he was married to Ryan.

His father, Herbert Hughes Jr, won custody of his son and said he would be placed in a live-in treatment centre.

Prosecutor Loni Petersen said: "I think this is the best solution for the long-term safety of Meg Ryan, the other victims and the defendant."

Wrong house

Last week, Mr Hughes pleaded no contest to trespassing charges for breaking into a Malibu home on 6 January, believing it belonged to the actress.

It was actually owned by an unrelated couple named Ryan.

Court papers said he helped himself to food and when the couple arrived home, they found Mr Hughes wandering through their home "dressed all in black with a fishing cap that had a chin strap of string".

Police found an open bottle of whisky, two bottles of wine and $2,700 (£1,920) in cash wrapped inside underwear, the papers said.

Mr Hughes reportedly told investigators he had broken in because the actress forgot to leave a house key under the doormat for him.

He had previously been convicted last year of trying to sneak firearms into the Texas ranch of the then President-elect George W Bush in December 2000.

He served six months in jail and also spent several months in a federal psychiatric hospital.

Ryan, 40, has starred in films including When Harry Met Sally, Courage Under Fire and new release Kate and Leopold.

She split from her husband of eight years, Dennis Quaid, in 2000 and was later linked with Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe.
