Monday, September 28, 1998 Published at 15:01 GMT 16:01 UK Entertainment British fashion brightens up ![]() Be warned - grey maybe 'out' next season The weekend saw the unveiling of the latest fashion collections at London Fashion Week - and if the high street follows the catwalk next year we could all be wearing much brighter colours, instead of this season's sombre hues. Taking centre stage at the show was the doyenne of British fashion - Vivienne Westwood. Named fashion designer of the year in 1990 and 1991, Westwood's mission appears to be to reverse the uniformity of fashion. Her Red Label Show was as flamboyant as ever with stained lips, pastel checks, feathers and crimped hair - a truly vaudeville affair.
At 5ft 11ins, she showed she was a chip off the old block as she following in her Texan mother Jerry Hall footsteps by making her UK catwalk debut. Other models who appeared in the show included Jodie Kidd and Bridget Hall but it was Elizabeth who had the task of modelling the prestigious closing outfit, a fuschia dress with a giant orchid for the plumage. Standing ovation for Ab Fab designer
Her inspiration for next year's season came from 1950s movies. Splashes of red and crimson infused with dark navy, black, khaki were the prominent colours used for her knee-length skirts, three-quarter length trousers and flat shoes.
Cut not colour But the Pierce and Fionda label made up of Reynold 'Ren' Pearce and Andrew Fionda chose to highlight the cut of the designs over colour for their Spring / Summer 1999 Collection. Their colours were subdued with details provided through stripes and light fabrics. The design team were keen to stress that the cut of the clothes was equally as important as the colour. Changing face of beauty British fashion's 'enfant terrible' Alexander McQueen tried to challenge society's perception of beauty in his opening show. The controversial Alexander McQueen used 22 year-old disabled model Aimee Mullins to front his London catwalk show, held in a former rubbish warehouse in Victoria. Aimee was born without fibula bones in her shins and had both legs were amputated below the knee when she was a year old.
In the past McQueen has also been credited with launching the career of size 14 supermodel, Sophie Dahl. The audience enjoyed his 45 minute show with three-quarter length flared trousers in broderie anglaise and skirts adorned with ruffle frills down one leg. Celebrities take notes Turning up to take note of the latest trends at designer Ronit Zilkha's show on Monday was TV celebrity Paula Yates.
Zilkha is also a favourite of the prime minister's wife, Cherie Blair. Mrs Blair's sister Lyndsey was also spotted at the show along with TV presenter Tania Bryer. Before London Fashion Week draws to a close on Tuesday there will also be a chance to see collections from designers Betsey Johnson, Jean Muir, Ben De Lisi, Bella Freud and Jasper Conran.
