Freddy heads Razzies nominations
Freddy Got Fingered was a big box office flop
While Hollywood gears up for Tuesday's Oscar nominations, the ceremony dedicated to the worst movies of the year has named its contenders.
The 22nd Razzies awards honour the failed blockbusters of the year. This year's nominations are heading by Tom Green's gross-out comedy Freddy Got Fingered with eight nominations, closely followed by Sylvester Stallone's Driven and singer Mariah Carey's debut, Glitter.
Green, who recently split from wife Drew Barrymore, is up for worst actor, director, screenplay and worst screen couple ("Tom Green and any animal he abuses"). In Freddy Got Fingered, he stars as an underachiever who desperately wants to become an animator. 'No value' Razzies founder John Wilson said he expects Freddy to be the front-runner for worst picture. He said: "The movie has no redeeming value. "If Tom Green's point was to be offensive and stupid and obnoxious, then my gosh, he made a masterpiece. But then, it still is offensive and stupid and obnoxious."
It was described by critics at the Hollywood Reporter as the "quite possibly the worst comedy film ever made". Epic Pearl Harbor and Kevin Costner film 3000 Miles to Graceland join Freddy, Driven and Glitter as the worst movies nominations. Mariah Carey has the distinction of being up for worst actress and worst screen couple - for her cleavage. Joining her in the worst actress category are the more established stars Penelope Cruz (Vanilla Sky, Blow and Captain Corelli's Mandolin), Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Original Sin), Jennifer Lopez (Angel Eyes and The Wedding Planner) and Charlize Theron (Sweet November). Return Green is joined in the worst actor category by Ben Affleck (Pearl Harbor), Costner, (3000 Miles to Graceland), Keanu Reeves (Hardball and Sweet November) and John Travolta (Domestic Disturbance and Swordfish). For Travolta it is an unwelcome return to the nominations list, after he picked up seven Razzies last year for Battlefield Earth. British director Peter Chelsom is sharing his worst director nomination with Warren Beatty, for flop film Town and Country. He joins Green, Michael Bay (Pearl Harbor), Vondie Curtis Hall (Glitter) and Renny Harlin (Driven). The Razzie trophy is a gaudy plastic raspberry atop a film canister, worth $4.29 (£3). Members consist of critics, film-goers and people who work in the entertainment business. The Razzie winners will be announced on 23 March, the eve of the Academy Awards ceremony.
