Record £73m week at Christie's
![]() Christie's is one of the world's most famous auctions
Christie's auction house has enjoyed a record-breaking £73m week and broken six
world records for individual artists.
A series of 19th and 20th century sales made a total of £73.1m - the best week the London auction house has had for more than a decade. The most expensive painting to be sold all week was Maurice de Vlaminck's La Seine a Chatou, which went under the hammer for £7.1m. Warhol Works by Impressionist, modern, post-war and contemporary artists went under the hammer during the February evening sales. And new auction world records were set for artists Glenn Brown, Thomas Demand, Andreas Gursky, Franz Marc, Pierre Soulages and Maurice de Vlaminck. There was also a global best-ever price for a contemporary photograph.
The Impressionist and Modern Art sale last Monday realised £41.2 million, the highest sale total for 10 years. And on Wednesday, three important paintings by Francis Bacon were sold for almost £2m. Christie's in London sold the works by the Irish-born artist as part of a £7.4m sale called Post-War Art, which included work by Erika Klein and Andy Warhol.
