The band's second album, Discovery, came first in a list compiled from album of the year round-ups in publications like NME, Ministry, Q and Uncut.

The French duo - who dress as robots to avoid having their photos taken - have been acclaimed for their retro dance sound.

Although Discovery failed to head any individual year-end review, it was highly rated often enough to top the overall chart.

Australian act Avalanches, who create dancefloor-friendly sound collages, were runners-up.

Completing a dance domination of the top three were Basement Jaxx who two years ago topped the poll of polls with their debut release, Remedy.

Radiohead, second in last year's poll for Kid A, came fourth this time with Amnesiac.

New bands Zero 7 and The Strokes, who have both made headlines this year, also made it into the Top 10.

But the best-selling album of the year, Dido's No Angel, did not make it onto the list.
