The three Bee Gee brothers, Barry Gibb, 55, and twins Robin
and Maurice Gibb, 52, receive CBEs in the diplomatic list.
The Bee Gees are among the most successful groups in pop history, having one of the biggest selling albums with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. They have achieved five number one singles and their greatest hits albums reached the top 10 in 2001. Opera diva Lesley Garrett is made a CBE for her services to music. The Yorkshire singer studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and, after fighting back from losing her voice, has become an international star.
She hit the headlines during a run as Adele in Die Fledermaus when, as part of the performance, she bared her backside. Sultry singer Sade, who is made an OBE, has sold more than 30 million albums since she hit the music scene in the mid-80s. The Nigerian-born star, whose full name is Helen Folsesade Adu, scored massive hits in with Your Love is King and Smooth Operator before taking a break from the industry. She made a triumphant return to the music scene in 2000 with the album Lover's Rock. Musical star Barbara Dickson is made an OBE for her long career in the theatre. The 53-year-old star has appeared in some of the West End's biggest productions including Blood Brothers and Spend, Spend, Spend as well as hitting the charts with the Chess song I Know Him So Well, alongside Elaine Page. Her television credits include Band of Gold and Taggart. An honorary MBE goes to Irish star Daniel O'Donnell for his services to music. The 40-year-old has a huge fanbase in both his native Ireland and in the UK and the US.
British opera export Colin Graham is appointed an OBE in the diplomatic list for his services to British opera and music in the USA. Now artistic director of the Opera Theatre of St Louis, his accolades include staging the world premières of The Dangerous Liaisons and Previn and Littell's A Streetcar Named Desire. Concert pianist William Barry Douglas is made an OBE for his services to music. Jeffrey Sonny Kruger is made an MBE for his contribution to jazz music, having worked with the likes of Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. |
