New boss at Opera House

A new executive director for the Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House has named it new executive director.

Michael Kaiser, the present executive director of the American Ballet Theatre, takes up the role on 12 November.

His appointment comes amid union negotiations which will have a major impact on the Opera House's future.

Sir Colin Southgate, chairman of the ROH board said: "I am very pleased to be announcing Michael Kaiser's appointment, at the beginning of the programme of change on which we are embarked.

Uncertain future

"Michael joins us in the full knowledge of our current union negotiations and the uncertain future of the Royal Opera House.

"At American Ballet Theatre and in the other organisations where he has served as director Mr Kaiser's record includes the elimination of accumulated deficits, increases in box office and fund-raising revenue, and the expansion of education and outreach programmes."

Directors recently announced proposals to close for one year in an attempt to claw the theatre back from the brink of bankruptcy.
