Cruise said: "I'm so proud of this film. I'm so proud of what we all did.

"Everybody put a lot into it. It's a very special picture."

Cruz also starred in the Spanish original, which was made by Alejandro Amenabar, the man who directed Cruise's ex-wife Nicole Kidman in The Others.

The Spanish actress said she did not feel she was retracing her steps of the first movie.

She said: "The characters have many things in common but are not the same people. So I never felt that I was repeating myself doing the same thing.

"I've seen it now many times and it doesn't stop surprising me. And you always find new things and it's so powerful.

"For me it's more than a movie. It's an experience to watch it."

She started seeing Cruise when his marriage to Kidman ended after almost 10 years of marriage.

The Mission Impossible star has told Vanity Fair that he is head-over-heels in love with Cruz.

"Cruise and Cruz - I thought: 'My God, I'm your boyfriend. You're my girlfriend,"' he said.

"You look at Audrey Hepburn. She had that kind of elegance and yet was accessible."

Crowe has previously directed Cruise in the romantic drama Jerry Maguire and recently made the 1970s music movie Almost Famous.
