The first Top of the Pops Awards have been handed out in Manchester, with eight categories voted for by viewers of the BBC One music show.

The ceremony paid tribute to George Harrison, and host Jamie Theakston read a statement from Sir Paul McCartney, who cancelled his appearance.

Best pop act:
Westlife
Also nominated were: Atomic Kitten, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Madonna.

Best R&B Act:
Destiny's Child
Also nominated were: Craig David, Shaggy, Usher, Wyclef Jean

Best Rock Act:
